Morgan

Windsurfing was not easy. Morgan watched as Jake cruised along for a bit. The trouble came when it was time to turn. Joe, their instructor, called out, “Remember your safety break!” Morgan reminded herself that was letting the sail go with the hand that was away from the mast. Jake remembered too late and tried to shift his weight without releasing properly. He fell. But he came up with a smile and a shrug.

“Okay!” Joe called. “Remember how to get going again? Do that and come back. Feet on either side of the mast!” Then he turned to Morgan. “Now you. Go toward Jake, then turn and come back to me.”

They’d only been in the water about fifteen minutes after about fifteen minutes of dry land instruction. They’d spent most of the time either in the water or standing on their boards, pulling the sail out of the water after falling.

By the end of the hour of instruction, they were both tacking fairly reliably. Joe said, “Okay, you’re off on your own now. Remember to practice turning both ways. Also, don’t go too far. It’s a lot easier to go out than to come back in. You’ve got an hour of practice time. If you go longer, it’ll be standard rental. Have fun!”

Morgan looked at Jake to make sure he was still wanting to do this. He smiled broadly. “This is great, right Morgan?”

She smiled and nodded. It was fun. It was also hard. And there were people zooming around actually knowing what they were doing, which was a little intimidating and also showed how little they knew at this point. But they could both move slowly across the water and turn in a slow, deliberate sort of way. So, they did that for another hour. A couple of times Morgan bailed because she would have otherwise run into someone, but it got to the point where as long as she really thought about it and was willing to do safety stops, she could stay on her board. Most of the time.

Jake was at least as good as she was but fell more because he tried to do more. He tried jibs as well as tacks. He watched the surfers around them and tried a fancy start where he just stepped onto his board instead of hauling the mast up out of the water once he was standing on the board. He wasn’t successful at the fancy start, but he tried. So, he spent more time in the water. But she admitted to herself that he was probably learning more and would probably be a better windsurfer than she was if they both kept this up.

When they hauled their boards back through the little channel between beds of sea grass to the shop and went in to check back in, Morgan was able to say an unequivocal yes when the person tending the counter asked if they’d had fun. She was tired and it felt like really learning to do this would be really daunting, but yes, it had been fun.
